The Kingston Parish rectory, located on Main Street, is a historic
building in a community that values its history. The rectory, which dates to ca. 1900 and is a fine example of vernacular architecture, is a component of the Mathews Downtown Historic District. Supporters of the Kingston Housing Initiative recognize that Mathews County currently has a severe shortage of good-quality rental properties that are affordable. In fact, the school system and the County Administration cite cost of living, especially housing, as a factor in attracting qualified employees. Our proposal offers a practical solution that addresses this problem. We feel that it would be a significant benefit to the community as a whole.
The proposed project envisions converting the rectory into an affordable two unit rental property. We have sought the assistance of Bush Construction, the company that built the Mathews YMCA and Westville Landing, and demonstrated its beneficial interest in Mathews County.
